Well, I think giving away music via internet is ok.
But if i release a Album which is pressed on CD, i have to deamnd money, because i have to pay the CDs aswell. In general Music should be as cheap as possible, a higher price means commerce to me - in most cases, and this should always be avoided.
CDs always should have a price everyone Can afford and the artist should be able to pay the costs of production and maybe earn a ittle bit money.
@ Eric: We are socialists, aren't we?
Socialists in the utilitarian sense of maximizing everyone's quality of life and acknowledging access to basic necessities as shelter and healthcare as basic human rights, sure. Sadly I don't see this happening here (U.S.) any time soon...
It seems that somewhere along the way certain people got it into their heads that artists are these altruistic purveyors of culture and that it's somehow acceptable to take what they offer and give nothing in return. Naturally something has gone wrong when someone like Michael Jackson can accrue that much wealth by doing nothing other than singing and dancing.
On the other hand, artists like yourself should AT THE VERY LEAST break even, if not profit modestly. Most recording artists funnel that money into new equipment anyhow, so it's a win-win situation. Unless you're an artist like DARKTHRONE and insist on releasing the same damn album every year for the past eight to ten years...
I actualy work with free downloadeble Relases only but i´m about to build up a Release on iTunes and other Store as well as Releases on CD.
Free Downloads are, for my Oppinion, a good Way to bring new and interesting Projects in the Listeners Focus, but you also have to Pay your Bills (Webspace etc), so if you don´t have enough Money in the Back to finace such things out of your own Pocket there´s nearly no Way around Selling the Releases.
I totaly agree with V.E.S.T. :"CDs always should have a price everyone Can afford and the artist should be able to pay the costs of production and maybe earn a ittle bit money."
Funny how those who run their mouths off most about "honor" don't seem to have much of it.
Someone needs to tell these pricks that it's not about "getting music" so much as building a new consciousness from the ground up--and that this includes standing beside artists we adore so that they can continue to flourish.
